Project Information

This initial phase of the Northern Parkway Program, extending between Sarival Avenue and Dysart Road, will construct an interim four-lane roadway consisting of the eastbound and westbound auxiliary lanes and the two outside travel lanes to achieve the interim roadway configuration of two travel lanes in each direction of the ultimate six-lane Northern Parkway. A center concrete barrier and an additional inside lane in each direction will be added in the future to form the ultimate six-lane configuration.

Connecting ramps for future grade-separated intersections (over-passes); bridge structures at the BNSF spur/143rd Avenue and Sarival Avenue crossings; new curb, gutter and street lighting at on/off ramps and intersecting cross streets; and the installation of new traffic signals at Sarival Avenue, Reems Road and Litchfield Road will also be constructed as part of this current project. Work began at the west end of the project at the intersection of Sarival Avenue and Butler Drive and continues eastward to Litchfield Road and then shifts southeastward to connect with the current Northern Avenue alignment, and continues eastward to match existing improvements at Dysart Road. Construction activity between Sarival Avenue and Dysart Road is slated for completion in Summer 2013. Landscaping along the new parkway and completion of overpasses at Reems Road and Litchfield Road will be provided as part of separate contracts following construction completion.

This project is funded in part by voter-approved Prop 400 – MAG (Maricopa Association of Governments) Regional Transportation Plan (

About the Northern Parkway Program

The future 12.5 mile segment of Northern Parkway extending between Loop 303 and US 60/Grand Avenue will traverse along the current Butler Drive alignment between Loop 303 and Litchfield Road north of Luke Air Force Base (LAFB) and then shift southeastward along the current alignment of Northern Avenue through the jurisdictions of El Mirage, Glendale, Peoria and Maricopa County.

The future Northern Parkway ultimate configuration will generally consist of six through lanes (three travel lanes in each direction with a center median). Grade-separated overpasses will enhance traffic flow at major arterial intersections, including Sarival Avenue, Reems Road, Litchfield Road, Dysart Road, El Mirage Road, 93rd Avenue (west ramps), 91st Avenue (east ramps), 83rd Avenue and 75th Avenue. A grade-separated underpass will be constructed at the intersection of 103rd Avenue. Overpasses will also cross over the BNSF Railroad at 143rd Avenue, 99th Avenue and 97th Avenue. Major bridges will cross the Agua Fria River, New River, US 60/Grand Avenue, BNSF Railroad and a bypass bridge will cross over Loop 101.
